Trafford Publishing author Thomas F. McLoughlin obtained a Science degree in Kentucky and went on to complete his masters in geology also in Kentucky. In 1980, McLoughlin joined the US department of Labor Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) where he spent the next 28 years collecting plant fossils in Southwestern Virginia. These fossils are in groups and located as to coal seam horizon and geographic location. There are over 50 plates with over 250 illustrations. Short descriptions of each plant type are provided.

This book has been designed for amateur rock hounds as well as a virtual guide for the more sophisticated collectors.

McGloughlin realized that there has been no other attempt by others to convey the fossil plants of the coal field in South Western Virginia. He became a fossil aficionado due to the sheer beauty and assortment of plant fossils. Ai??He felt a certain responsibility to publicize a book Dissertation in order for other fossil buffs to enjoy.
